Location ideas

This is charlies grandparents house near to Melton Mowbry, Leistershire. Its the perfect place to film because of its style. The shot below is taken from the front of the house, as you can see it's rather old.

Adverts

This is Mika's advert for his new album 'The Boy Who Knew Too Much'. We like the idea of this poster as it reflects the artist and gives you an insight into the kind of music you'd expect through colour. His name works as his logo and the same font is used for and of his merchandise. We hope to acheive the same kind of thing, making a cover to suit the artist and music. Therefore our ad won't look like Mika's it will keep within theme ana just use the conventions.

Digi-pak

A digi-pak is basically a cd case made of hard card. It gives more creative room for promotional packaging, were thinking of having a gatefold for more room for images of the artists.

Initial Ideas
  • Titles of songs
  • Name of artist on front
  • DVD video
  • CD-rom capability includes single
  • Making of music video
  • Interviews with Artist
  • Features a unique love letter which will be the unique selling point of product
  • Secret password to website
  • Desktop backgrounds

Original XX Music Video

This is The XX's official music video for heart skipped a beat. We thought it was a bit weak, as it is quite repetitive in the footage. The use of colour filters works well with the music and reflects the emotions felt within the song in a suttle way. We believe it doesn't do the song justice as the lyrics are strong.

We'd rather our video followed a narrative as it would appeal to a wider audience and be interesting for the viewer from start to finish.

Mood Boards

We have planned for our mise en scene to have an old romantic feel to it, using old objects which have clearly been lying around unused for a long period of time. To fit this we would also like the house we film in to have an old feel to it, with lots of objects which have been gathering dust.

Examples and Influences

We like the the editing in this video and how the pass fits perfectly to the song. The lyrics come across as innocent, similar to our choice of song, and this is portrayed in the video. We particularly like the shot of the origami bird going round on the vinyl. The 'Old' look portrayed in this video works particularly well and is definitely a look we are interested in using filters and a strong mise en scene.

We like the quirkiness in this video but not so much the performance aspect. The shot choices are interesting through out and how Imogen draws your attention to various objects around her. She is the only artist featured as it is her song which is Artist recognition.

this is an advert we saw that uses the lighting and slow technique that we want to do in our music video

Development on track one; The Xx

Lyrics

(Instrumental)

Please don't say we're done
When I'm not finished
I could give you so much
Make you feel, like never before
Welcome, they said welcome to the floor

It's been a while
And you've found someone better
But I've been waiting too long to give this up
The more I see, I understand
But sometimes, I still need you

Sometimes, I still need you (x7)

(Instrumental)

I was struggling to get in
Left waiting outside your door
I was sure
You'd give me more

No need to come to me
When I can make it all the way to you
You made it clear
You weren't near
Near enough to me

Heart skipped a beat
And when I caught it you were out of reach
But I'm sure, I'm sure
You've heard if before

Indepth Ideas

Instrumental: Instrumental at the beginning is made up of various close ups followed by an establishing shot of the room the boy is sat in. Shows a close up of someone having a cup of coffee and tap spoon to beat.

Verse 1: The boy sitting at a piano in the corner of a room looking through his music and turns to a page with the message 'i'm not finished' (quote from verse one). The boy then looks over his shoulder at the room and stands up, close up of him placing down the music and seeing 'i'm not finished'.

Verse 2: Establishing shot showing a girl dusting photos in her bedroom, comes to one of her and her former boyfriend (boy in verse one), over shoulder shot of her picking it up, fast reaction shot of her looking bleak, followed by her putting the photo down, and close up of image with her leaving the room softly out of focus in the background.

Chorus: The line 'Sometimes, i still need you' is repeated seven times, during this he boy will head to the bathroom where he washes his face, when he looks up he sees 'The Xx' wrote in condensation on the mirror, at the fourth 'sometimes, i still need you', the girl walks past the door which is reflected in the mirror and he turns to follow her.

Instrumental: Match on Action shots of him looking for her under beds and behind doors then change to girl where she sees the boy going up the stairs and follows him, he closes the door. She then gos to open it and he isn't in the room.

Verse 3: This verse starts with the boy seeing the door handle moving in the room he's in, the door doesn't open so he gos to open it and no one is there.

Verse 4: Lots of shots of them looking for each other in rooms they've both been in to show to the audience they are both in the same house, subliminal messages are featured like the lyrics wrote out on book spines. Also shots of them both clapping to the beat.

Verse 5: As the music begins to speed up their looking will become faster as if they're running out of time. The last shots are of the boy going back to the piano, and seeing the music is on a page with titled music saying '
Heart skipped a beat' (title of song and lyric in last verse) . The girl gos back to her bedroom and finds the photo of her and her ex are no longer there.

Initial Ideas

Track one: Heart Skipped A Beat - The Xx
  • Film in one house and make it out to be a game of hide and seek where they both leave each other messages and find various objects of each others
  • The house will be large and 'old schooly', full of antiques and objects which will be pleasing to the eye
  • Shots of boy/girl finding musical instruments and playing the song then going to look for one another again (works as a flash back)
  • match on action shots of them looking below and in things for example under a bed
  • Before one artist begins to sings the other claps to link them

Track two: You Are The Moon - The Hush Sound
  • Opening is the artist falling asleep at the edge of a river at sunset, she stays still as the world seems to be going by (see image)
  • Various shots of objects floating by and she picks some out of the water such as a picnic blanket
  • Gives the impression the artist has no control of her life
  • The water would reflect the lyrics 'i will bring a mirror', also have a mirror edging itself towards her in each shot
  • When adding footage add birds and other quirky things

Track 3: Touch Me Touching You
  • A roller disco idea where they are playing party games
  • The disco will have an eighties feel as this is when discos were most popular
  • Dance routines will take place throughout in time to the music and lyrics

What we've done so far...

So far we have analysed various music videos from different genres and pulled them apart using the Goodwin theory. Having made presentations we presented them to the class using descriptive technical language. We also spent a lesson working on a song called 'Crystal Lake', where we brainstormed and created ideas for a music video.

This is a list of Goodwins theories which we have looked into during our build up to our music video task:

  • Links between Lyrics and Visuals
  • Links between Music and Visuals (Complimentary, Contradicting or Amplification)
  • Genre characteristics
  • Intertextual reference
  • Notions of Looking (objectification of women)
  • Voyerism (direct gaze, other people looking at artist, insight into artists life, screens and mirrors)
  • Demands of the Record Label (representation of the artist)
  • Performance based, Narrative based or Concept based music videos

The practical component of this project is worth 60 marks.

20 marks will be for planning and research, which will be done on blogs.

20 marks will be for the written evaluation. This will be completed on Powerpoint and include video and still images. The evaluation questions are:

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancilliary texts?
What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
